Bloody Butcher Corn

This year's crop of heirloom dent corn, Bloody Butcher, is coming on strong.  This variety was very common in the Appalachian region in the 1840s but has almost disappeared in modern times.  Our biggest challenge growing this crop is not sharing too much with the overpopulated deer community.  Deer will bypass thousands of acres of modern GMO corn to munch on this instead.  A double stretch of white rope strung all the way around the field makes it difficult for them to judge the jumping distance.  Since they don't know how to cross it, it works pretty well to keep them out.
